Malaysian Treasures: Langkawi Island

Malaysian Treasures: Langkawi Island

Langkawi is a beautiful island in the northwestern part of Peninsular Malaysia; many people describe it as one of the most beautiful islands in the world. Additionally, the island is not spoiled by tourists, which makes it a perfect holiday destination. The island is especially renowned for its many great attractions. Langkawi offers breathtaking scenery with its beautiful beaches, incredibly fine sand, crystal-clear water and coastal mangrove swamps. The inland areas are no less striking: the tropical jungles are thick with luxuriant vegetation and will impress nature lovers looking for a pristine, largely untouched rainforest.

Langkawi’s duty-free shopping is the next best reason to visit, after its extensive beaches and verdant mountains. Great for shopping enthusiasts, these venues stock a wide range of tobacco products, liquors, chocolates, sportswear, luggage, perfumes and kitchenware, among other items.

The best way to travel to Langkawi is by plane. There are hourly flights from Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Subang Airport to Langkawi, which land at Langkawi International Airport. There are also direct flights from Penang and Singapore.

TipsTips for Submitting a Successful APVRS 2017 Abstract

Abstract submission for the 11th APVRS Congress in Kuala Lumpur is now open. Here are some tips and tricks for submitting a successful abstract.

  1. Think outside the box. Abstracts that include new and innovative ideas will surely attract the attention of the Abstract Selection Committee. For posters, e-posters and videos, creative design elements are encouraged, as long as they also enhance the presentation of scientific material.
  2. Focus on facts. It is essential that the ideas presented in submitted abstracts be factually accurate. Proofread your submission carefully to avoid any errors in language or scientific data that could be misleading, confusing or erroneous.
  3. Read the submission guidelines. Each abstract will be reviewed by members of the Abstract Selection Committee and given a final score. Abstracts that fail to follow requirements outlined in the submission guidelines may receive lower scores or be rejected outright.
  4. Don’t delay. Submit your abstract in a timely manner to avoid any last-minute technical complications or other issues. Late submissions will not be accepted.

APVRS 2017 Host City: Kuala Lumpur

APVRS 2017 Host City: Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur is both the capital and the largest city in Malaysia, with a population of around 7 million including the greater suburban area. It has developed rapidly in the past 150 years from a small mining settlement into a bustling metropolis with an iconic skyline.

The Petronas Twin Towers, one KL’s most famous landmarks, were completed in 1996 and are still the tallest twin towers in the world. Visitors can walk between the two towers using the sky bridge on the 41st floor and then travel all the way up to the 86th floor observation deck.

Other noteworthy sites in KL are the Sultan Abdul Samad building, formerly the offices of the British colonial secretariat, and Masjid Jamek, a Moorish-style mosque. Popular local attractions include the KL Bird Park with the world’s largest free flight walk-in aviary, the Royal Selangor Pewter Visitor Centre, and Central Market where a variety of local handicrafts and art can be purchased.
