Mamak Stalls in Malaysia

Mamak Stalls in Malaysia

To find some of the best local comfort food in Kuala Lumpur and around Malaysia, head to a mamak stall. These down-to-earth restaurants offer affordable fare in a relaxed environment, which often comprises an outdoor patio or street-side location.

Popular dishes available at a mamak stall include roti canai (Indian flatbread often served with lentils or curry), nasi lemak (coconut rice served with various side dishes) and mie goreng (stir-fried yellow noodles).

Order yourself a popular Malaysian brew using the handy cheat sheet below:

Word Meaning
Teh Tea with sweetened condensed milk and sugar
Teh-O Tea with sugar but no milk
Teh-O Ais Iced teh-o
Teh-O Kosong Plain tea without milk or sugar

If you prefer coffee instead of tea, just replace “teh” with “kopi” in the examples above.

Kuala Lumpur’s Shopping Scene

Kuala Lumpur’s Shopping Scene

With more than 60 shopping malls located within its city limits, Kuala Lumpur is one of the major shopping destinations in Asia. Shoppers can find priceless antiques, local handicrafts and souvenirs, as well as popular international luxury brands.

One of the city’s premier malls, Suria KLCC, is located right at the bottom of the famous Petronas Twin Towers. It is home to numerous designer shops as well as many popular restaurants.

However, Kuala Lumpur’s most well-known shopping district is Bukit Bintang. Spanning over several main roads, this area includes shops in all price ranges, along with many cafes and al fresco dining options.

Popular shopping malls in Bukit Bintang include Berjaya Times Square, which features an indoor theme park with a 7-storey roller coaster, and Pavilion KL, which is home to former Malaysian prime minister Tun Mahathir bin Mohamad’s Japanese-style bakery called The Loaf. For the technologically inclined, Low Yat Plaza offers all types of electronics, video games and computer accessories.

No matter what you buy, you will need ringgit, the local currency in Malaysia. Foreign currency can be exchanged at major banks and airports, though money changers located in shopping malls may offer better rates. ATMs are also widely available in Kuala Lumpur.

The ringgit’s favorable exchange rate (1 USD = 4.23 MYR) makes shopping in Kuala Lumpur very affordable. Additionally, tourists can enjoy tax-free shopping with Malaysia’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) refund scheme on purchases from approved vendors. Be sure to save your receipts and claim your refund at the airport!

Penang is a beautiful island in northern Malaysia famous for its food, culture and numerous tourist attractions. It is also included on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Acclaimed by Lonely Planet as one of the top food destinations in the world, Penang’s cuisine reflects the ethnic mix of Chinese, Malay and Indian traditions in Malaysia. It is especially famous for street food served al fresco.

Must-try dishes include char kuey teow (wok fried rice noodles), Penang laksa (a sour spicy noodle broth that was named one of the best dishes in the world by Lonely Planet), nasi lemak (rice cooked in coconut milk with curry), nasi kandar (a variety of curries with rice), rojak (spicy fruit and vegetable salad) and cendol (a shaved ice dessert featuring palm sugar).

Feeling hungry? Penang-style restaurants can also be found in Kuala Lumpur. Be sure to ask members of our APVRS 2017 co-host, the Malaysian Society of Ophthalmology, for their recommendations!
